Our kiln shelves come pre-coated with kiln wash from the factory, so there is no need to apply an additional layer of kiln wash before first use.
Before using new kiln shelves for your regular firings, we strongly recommend performing an empty firing (without any pottery pieces) to properly prepare the shelves.
Over time, kiln wash may require maintenance, especially if glaze runs onto the shelf during firing. If this occurs, carefully remove the melted glaze from the shelf surface and reapply kiln wash to the affected area to restore protection.
After applying fresh kiln wash, it is recommended to perform an empty firing before placing ceramic pieces back onto the shelf.
Proper kiln shelf maintenance will help protect the shelf surface and extend its lifespan.
