Ceramic materials should always be handled using appropriate studio safety practices.
General Safety
-
Keep all ceramic materials out of reach of children.
-
Do not ingest ceramic materials.
-
Do not eat, drink or smoke while handling ceramic materials.
-
Avoid unnecessary skin and eye contact.
-
Wash hands thoroughly after use.
-
Do not use ceramic materials for purposes other than their intended ceramic application.
Dust Safety
Extra care should be taken when handling dry ceramic stains, powders or dried ceramic material.
-
Avoid creating airborne dust.
-
Wear suitable respiratory protection when handling dry ceramic powders.
-
Work in an appropriately ventilated area.
-
Avoid dry sweeping ceramic dust.
-
Use wet-cleaning methods or appropriate dust-control procedures.
-
Take particular care when sanding fired or unfired ceramic surfaces, as sanding can generate fine airborne particles.
Kiln & Firing Safety
Ceramic materials can release gases or fumes during firing.
Kilns should be installed and operated according to the kiln manufacturer's instructions and used with appropriate kiln-room ventilation.
Do not remain unnecessarily close to a firing kiln, particularly during periods when organic materials and other components are burning out.
Food Safety
Lead-free does not automatically mean food-safe.
Food safety depends on the complete fired ceramic system, including the clay body, colourant or underglaze, glaze, firing temperature, application and firing conditions.
Where a finished piece is intended for food or beverage contact, use a suitable food-safe glaze system and follow the glaze manufacturer's instructions.
For commercial production or where food safety is critical, appropriate testing of the finished fired ware is recommended.
Studio Hygiene
Good ceramic studio hygiene is one of the most effective ways to reduce unnecessary exposure to ceramic materials.
Keep work areas clean, minimise dust, clean spills promptly and avoid allowing dried ceramic material to accumulate on floors and work surfaces.
Important Note
Ceramic results can vary depending on clay body, glaze, application, thickness, firing schedule, kiln atmosphere and individual studio conditions.
Product images, colour samples and test tiles should therefore be treated as a guide rather than a guarantee of the final fired result.

We strongly recommend testing all new materials, colours and combinations before applying them to important or production work.
